At Yarm Preparatory School we firmly believe that games and physical education are a vital part of a child’s education. The provision of our wide-reaching sports curriculum ensures that every pupil is given the opportunity to further themselves physically, mentally and socially through sport.
Competition in lessons and fixtures offers a chance to evaluate performance and develop excellent teamwork and communication with others. Sportsmanship, fair play, coping with losses and celebrating success with humility are key life skills that we nurture.
Every pupil from Year 3 upwards is given the opportunity to represent the school in competitive fixtures against other leading independent schools. They revel in the opportunity to pull on their school sports kit and play representative games with enormous pride. Our best competitors go on to compete at regional and national tournaments on a termly basis.
P.E. lessons are taught in form groups of mixed gender and ability. Sessions are designed to challenge all abilities. A clear progression ensures that children are motivated, improving their technique and range of skills in each area. Boys’ and girls’ games are generally taught separately although there may be a crossover for some sports such as tennis, athletics and hockey.
The Activities programme and after school clubs allow us to expand on the range of sport offered as well as helping the pupils to gain plenty of regular, physical exercise.
We feel that all children should be challenged in a sporting environment; they should feel encouraged to give of their best and relish reaching their potential.
