Be inspired at Yarm Sixth Form

Our students consistently achieve exceptional A-level results and receive the pastoral care and support needed to flourish as young adults beyond the Sixth Form.

Our Sixth Form

Yarm School is a leading independent school for pupils aged 3-18 located in the beautiful town of Yarm in the North East of England.

Since our foundation in 1978, we have established ourselves as the major educational success story in the North East. Our outstanding academic success has placed us as the top performing school in Teesside and County Durham and our unrivalled extra-curricular opportunities have seen pupils achieving regional, country and even national honours.

We offer specialist teaching, outstanding pastoral care, state-of-the-art facilities, an extensive extra-curricular programme and small class sizes to all of our pupils here at Yarm School. Our aim is to provide pupils with the attributes they need to develop into adults who will contribute positively to society. It is important to us that the necessary skills are honed within a caring, friendly and mutually supportive community.

Our independent Nursery, Prep School, Senior School and Sixth Form welcome ambitious families from around Teesside and the North East, including Yarm, Stockton, Wynyard, Darlington, Northallerton, Hartlepool and more.

We Are Yarm School

Ruth Langford

Ruth Langford

Vice-Chair of Governors

For the past seven years I have been privileged to be one of the Yarm School Governors, extending my connection to the School which began in 2001 when our family moved to the North East from Birmingham. Our three children started at Yarm School and it was a brand new venture for the whole family as we had no previous connections with the North East.  We found the Yarm School community welcoming and friendly with opportunities around every corner.  Over the years, and like many other parents, we have  collected offspring at varying times of the day and night after trips, or fixtures. I have always been struck by the vibrancy of the place. For me, it is the School that never sleeps, exuding its own special ’buzz’ and energy. It is a happy place with so much going on, but in a purposeful and well organised way. The School has an exciting future ahead and I feel humbled and privileged to be able to play a small part in The Yarm School journey.

Head of Classics - Latin & ClassCiv

I joined Yarm School in 2008; I was fresh out of university and did my teacher training while working here, and have been here ever since. I've been a First Year Tutor since my earliest days at the School and I really enjoy seeing how much our youngest pupils grow in confidence, responsibility and skills in just that first year. I love teaching Classics and introducing pupils to the ancient world: I can't think of any other job where I would get to talk all day about Greek myths, or Latin grammar, or the origins of words. But one of my favourite things about working at Yarm School is the opportunity to get involved in drama: every year the Fourth Years stage an ancient Greek play (in English!) and I’m always impressed by their energy, dedication and talent.

The thing I like most about Yarm is that you can do lots of different things you can't do at other schools. I started Yarm in Year 4 and found there was a big difference from my old school. I also like how much sport is on offer and all the different after school activities there are so we can keep active.

I joined Yarm School in Lower Sixth and have loved exploring the range of opportunities available here. I have been able to take part in varied sporting and musical activities, including a hockey tour in Edinburgh.

Former Pupil - Solicitor, Endeavour Partnership

I joined Yarm School Sixth Form in 2007. The whole school had a lovely and welcoming atmosphere and I was quickly made to feel at home. After I completed my A Levels, I went on to study Law at the University of Leeds. I stayed close to home, returning to the area to undertake my training contract with a local law firm, the Endeavour Partnership. I qualified as a Solicitor in 2017 and I am still with the Endeavour Partnership, practising Employment Law. I still like to visit Yarm School both in my professional capacity to get involved with its career events, but also in my personal capacity to see some shows at its amazing theatre!

Head of Pastoral Care (Upper KS2), Year 6 Form Teacher

As well as being a member of the teaching staff, I am also a former pupil. I joined the Preparatory School in 1994 and stayed all the way through to Sixth Form. I enjoyed representing the School in rugby, rowing and the CCF and was also a prefect during my time in the Upper Sixth. I have fond memories of Mr Tate’s school minibus trips to faraway places such as the Arctic Circle, Russia and Turkey in the late 1990s. I joined Yarm as a member of staff since the academic year 2007/08 and was blown away by how much the School had changed since my time here as a pupil. It is a fantastic place to teach and the development and progress of this fine institution has been staggering over the years. The pupils are highly motivated and the parents really buy into the ethos of the School. I am currently the Head of Pastoral Care for Upper Key Stage 2 and also have a Year 6 form. I find the job highly rewarding and get a real buzz from seeing my pupils learning and participating in extracurricular activities. One of the best things about a Yarm School education is the character development of our pupils. I believe that the School is truly exceptional in developing an individual’s self-confidence.

Headmaster

I feel incredibly lucky to be Headmaster of such a fantastic school. The sense of community at Yarm is second to none and we value our place in our local community, too.  The breadth of opportunity on offer means that there is something for everyone to discover and in which to thrive.  Our pupils are confident without a shred of pretentiousness and our talented and passionate staff guide and support each individual on their personal journeys of discovery. This is no ordinary school!

I think all the activities available to us here at Yarm are great in creating such a strong community. As a School Officer, I really enjoy being able to continue creating a sense of community within the school.

Former Pupil - Medical Officer, British Army

I joined Yarm School in 2006 and watched the School evolve over the time I was there. Looking back now, it is almost unrecognisable from the perspective that there have been so many positive improvements and developments. During my time at Yarm, I enjoyed rowing, drama and CCF. I am pleased to see that these are all still flourishing now, and I am sure they will continue to thrive in the future. After Yarm I went onto study Medicine at the University of Birmingham. Following graduation I joined the Royal Army Medical Corps seconded to the NHS. Having completed training at Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, I am now a Medical Officer in the British Army.

I love all of the opportunities like fixtures, clubs and activities! I love how everyone is so supportive and welcomes anyone in with a smile and you can go to any of the teachers or your friends and they will always do what they can to help you. There is so much to offer at Yarm and I would never leave if I had an option because every time you come to school you are greeted with friendly smiles and a "good morning" and "hello"!

Adventure, discovery and the thrill of learning abound from the very first day a pupil joins us. There is a unique buzz about life at Yarm and a genuine warmth that runs throughout our community. We are committed to working in close partnership for the benefit of every boy and girl. It’s a pleasure, a privilege and huge amounts of fun helping each pupil flourish as they journey through the School. We love what we do and so will you!
