Be Inspired at Yarm Sixth Form

Our students consistently achieve exceptional A-level results and receive the pastoral care and support needed to flourish as young adults beyond the Sixth Form.

Our Sixth Form

Yarm School is a leading independent school for pupils aged 3-18 located in the beautiful town of Yarm in the North East of England.

Since our foundation in 1978, we have established ourselves as the major educational success story in the North East. Our outstanding academic success has placed us as the top performing school in Teesside and County Durham and our unrivalled extra-curricular opportunities have seen pupils achieving regional, country and even national honours.

We offer specialist teaching, outstanding pastoral care, state-of-the-art facilities, an extensive extra-curricular programme and small class sizes to all of our pupils here at Yarm School. Our aim is to provide pupils with the attributes they need to develop into adults who will contribute positively to society. It is important to us that the necessary skills are honed within a caring, friendly and mutually supportive community.

Our independent Nursery, Prep School, Senior School and Sixth Form welcome ambitious families from around Teesside and the North East, including Yarm, Stockton, Wynyard, Darlington, Northallerton, Hartlepool and more.

We Are Yarm School

Ruth Langford

Ruth Langford

Vice-Chair of Governors

For the past seven years I have been privileged to be one of the Yarm School Governors, extending my connection to the School which began in 2001 when our family moved to the North East from Birmingham. Our three children started at Yarm School and it was a brand new venture for the whole family as we had no previous connections with the North East.  We found the Yarm School community welcoming and friendly with opportunities around every corner.  Over the years, and like many other parents, we have  collected offspring at varying times of the day and night after trips, or fixtures. I have always been struck by the vibrancy of the place. For me, it is the School that never sleeps, exuding its own special ’buzz’ and energy. It is a happy place with so much going on, but in a purposeful and well organised way. The School has an exciting future ahead and I feel humbled and privileged to be able to play a small part in The Yarm School journey.

Head of Classics - Latin & ClassCiv

I joined Yarm School in 2008; I was fresh out of university and did my teacher training while working here, and have been here ever since. I've been a First Year Tutor since my earliest days at the School and I really enjoy seeing how much our youngest pupils grow in confidence, responsibility and skills in just that first year. I love teaching Classics and introducing pupils to the ancient world: I can't think of any other job where I would get to talk all day about Greek myths, or Latin grammar, or the origins of words. But one of my favourite things about working at Yarm School is the opportunity to get involved in drama: every year the Fourth Years stage an ancient Greek play (in English!) and I’m always impressed by their energy, dedication and talent.

One of the best things about Yarm School is the excellent environment in which everyone is willing to go above and beyond to help you reach your potential, whether that be in the classroom or any of the extra curricular activities.

The thing I like most about Yarm is that you can do lots of different things you can't do at other schools. I started Yarm in Year 4 and found there was a big difference from my old school. I also like how much sport is on offer and all the different after school activities there are so we can keep active.

Senior Staff Instructor (CCF), Coach Hire Coordinator, Lost Property

My time at Yarm School commenced in 2005 after 23 years in the Army as a military musician, finishing as a Warrant Officer Class II, stationed in Catterick. My role at Yarm is varied, from assisting the Contingent Commander of the CCF Contingent and coordinating transport including school minibuses and coach bookings for trips, to managing lost property and assisting the Music Department when needed. It has been a privilege to witness the School grow in so many ways over the last 15 years. As the SSI (Senior Staff Instructor) with the CCF, I have found it particularly rewarding to watch new Third Year Cadets join and remain with the CCF right up until Upper Sixth. We have enjoyed yearly Central Summer Camps with flights in helicopters, travelling in £1 million armoured vehicles, and Static Line parachuting at aged 16. Our former cadets have gone on to become Army Doctors, RAF fast Jet Pilots, and Royal Artillery Officers.

I joined Yarm in Lower Sixth and I am studying Maths, English Literature and Theatre. The academic support available is incredible and I have been so impressed by the amount of extra-curricular opportunities on offer. Whether it be in music, drama or sport, there's definitely something for everyone; I played Ellen in the Senior School production of Miss Saigon the musical which was an incredible experience.

The thing I love the most is that we have a wonderful community at this school and everyone is caring.

Yarm School is a fun and friendly place to work. Being the first point of contact for parents, I develop a strong rapport with them and assist in facilitating their 'Yarm School journey'. I am also privileged to have a wonderful relationship with the pupils from observing their first tentative days in our Nursery to leaving as confident individuals. This is extremely rewarding and I thoroughly enjoy every single day!

I attended Yarm School from 1986 to 1993 and was Head Boy in my final year. I went on to study Economics at Newcastle University before joining PwC in Leeds in 1996 and have remained there ever since! I became a Partner in 2009, was Senior Partner in the Leeds office from 2013 to 2016 and now lead PwC's private business practice across the North of England.Over the last few years, I have returned to Yarm School to do mock interviews with Sixth Formers preparing for university applications and have been blown away by the amazing facilities at the school. It's great to see the progress made and how the School continues to flourish.

Adventure, discovery and the thrill of learning abound from the very first day a pupil joins us. There is a unique buzz about life at Yarm and a genuine warmth that runs throughout our community. We are committed to working in close partnership for the benefit of every boy and girl. It’s a pleasure, a privilege and huge amounts of fun helping each pupil flourish as they journey through the School. We love what we do and so will you!

Former Pupil - Architecture | Cambridge University

I'm currently studying Architecture at Cambridge University and row for the Cambridge Women's Blues crew. I loved my time at Yarm and made friends for life there. I am so grateful to all of my teachers for supporting me and preparing me so well for life after Yarm and of course to the rowing and sports coaches who were instrumental to my rowing success whilst at School, exposing me to numerous valuable opportunities and experiences.

Headmaster

I feel incredibly lucky to be Headmaster of such a fantastic school. The sense of community at Yarm is second to none and we value our place in our local community, too.  The breadth of opportunity on offer means that there is something for everyone to discover and in which to thrive.  Our pupils are confident without a shred of pretentiousness and our talented and passionate staff guide and support each individual on their personal journeys of discovery. This is no ordinary school!
