At Yarm Preparatory School we firmly believe that sport and physical education are a vital part of a child’s education.
The provision of our wide-reaching sports curriculum ensures that every pupil is given the opportunity to further themselves physically, mentally and socially through sport.
As well as promoting health and well-being throughout the School, sport influences other important aspects of School life.
All of the sports we offer demand a level of respect, fair play, and good sportsmanship. They have to learn to play well with and against one another, how to cope with losses and how to celebrate success with humility. We build upon these skills inside the classroom and encourage pupils to practice throughout School.
We embed communication, ambition, problem-solving and resilience into everything we do here a Yarm Preparatory School. Sport naturally teaches and develops these areas further.
Physical Education is integrated into both our curriculum and our extracurricular activities.
We teach PE lessons in form groups of mixed gender and ability. Our specialist teachers create sessions that challenge our pupils and we provide clear progression so that they remain motivated to improve their techniques and skills in every area.
Games is part of our Year 3-6 curriculum. These lessons are generally separate for girls and boys. However, sports like tennis, athletics, cricket, swimming and hockey do see some crossover.
We boast an unrivalled activities and after school clubs programme which allows us to expand on the variety of sports we offer in class. It also allows children to benefit from further coaching sessions and encourages an active lifestyle.
Every pupil from Year 3 upwards is given the opportunity to represent the School in competitive workshops and fixtures against other leading independent schools. They revel in the opportunity to pull on their sports kit and play representative games with enormous pride. These opportunities are available in Netball, Hockey, Cricket, Rounders, Rugby and Football.
For our best performers, there is also the chance to compete at regional and national tournaments on a termly basis. Currently, our pupils make it to this level every year.
As well as regular fixtures throughout the year, we also provide annual hockey and cricket tours. Towards the end of the spring term, our hockey players travel to Holland to challenge local teams, embrace cultural experiences and make new friends with similar interests. Our cricketers spend some of their summer travelling through North Yorkshire on a tour that culminates in Scarborough.
Both of these tours promote confidence and independent thinking in our pupils, as well as providing an excellent, good-fun opportunity to build on their sporting talents.
We challenge pupils in the sporting environment. However, we encourage them to always try their best and relish the many benefits and enjoyment that sport brings.
