Our Sixth Form students achieved fantastic A Level results in 2021 under unprecedented conditions, reinforcing our reputation as one of the leading academic schools in the North East.
We are extremely proud of this year’s Upper Sixth students who have demonstrated incredible endeavour and resilience over the last 18 months despite having this important stage of their school lives disrupted by Covid-19.
2021 saw students accepted onto a diverse range of courses at a number of prestigious universities, including 25 current and recent leavers gaining places to study healthcare degrees like medicine, dentistry and veterinary medicine at Manchester, Leicester, Imperial College London and more; 9 students pursuing chemical, aerospace, product design, electrical or civil engineering; and 5 students accepted on Psychology courses at Bristol, Northumbria, Newcastle and Durham.
Other courses include: Popular Music, English and Drama, Artificial Intelligence and Computer Science, Finance and Business, History, Architecture, Fashion Design and Marketing, and among the School’s successful Oxbridge students is the sixth Yarm student in seven years to gain a place reading German at Oxford.
Dr Huw Williams, Headmaster, said: “Despite the uncertainty caused by changing guidance about examinations, the cohort remained impressively engaged with their academic study, optimistic and positive in their outlook and tremendously supportive of each other. In what has been the most unusual year, we celebrate their collective achievements and the many individual stories of hard work and determination.
This year, our leavers are going on to study at prestigious universities across the country from Exeter to St Andrews, including Bath, London, Cambridge, Oxford, Manchester, Durham and Edinburgh. They will read a diverse range of subjects including medicine, design, law, modern languages, music, business, economics, psychology, and engineering.
I wholeheartedly congratulate our students for their efforts and their many successes. These students have been distinctly challenged during their A Level years. These experiences, however, have also provided them with a unique opportunity to learn more about themselves and to see what they are truly capable of, allowing them to foster independence, adaptability and resilience, and retain perspective in the face of adversity. They leave school more experienced than their counterparts from previous years: these young men and women are well placed for future success and I look forward to seeing what they achieve in the next steps after Yarm.”
