Yarm School prides itself on helping every pupil in its care to fulfil his or her potential. We quickly get to know pupils as individuals, encouraging their personal development through our supportive ethos, pastoral care and extensive extra-curricular programme. Pupils are mutually respectful of each other and feel both supported and encouraged by the highly qualified and dedicated teaching staff. This ethos, together with small class sizes, results in exceptional academic success. Yarm School’s GCSE and A Level results are way above the national and regional average.
The main philosophy of Yarm Senior School is that pupils should experience a broad range of subjects and that ‘doors should be kept open’ for as long as possible. In the first year (Year 7) the following subjects are studied: English, Maths, Science, German or French, Computing, Latin, History, Geography, Design & Technology, Art, Music and Religious Education. From Second Year all pupils are taught Science separately as Biology, Chemistry and Physics and at the end of that school year some small subject choices are made. Towards the end of Third Year pupils and parents are consulted about which subjects are to be studied at GCSE level.
Sport and Music play important roles in school life and PE/Games receive a more generous time allocation than in many schools. At Yarm School pupils are encouraged to develop hobbies and interests, which help foster life skills. Each pupil has two timetabled Activity Lessons where they can choose from over 50 activities, ranging from calligraphy to watersports.
The School is highly unusual in employing its own outdoor education specialists who regularly lead activities such as, rock climbing, hill walking and caving expeditions. These and other school trips can be for a weekend in the UK or in countries further afield.
The School has excellent facilities set in an attractive campus. Many of the buildings are modern and were purpose-built. We do hope that you will visit us and experience for yourself what Yarm School has to offer.
