We are reshaping our Sixth Form Scholarship programme to offer up to four fully funded places to ambitious young people in the North East wishing to study across the full range of A Level subjects.
We have removed previous constraints on subject combinations to ensure that any student who meets the criteria can apply. The new programme offers bright, driven students the opportunity to benefit from an independent education, which extends far beyond their academic progress to include personal development, exceptional extracurricular opportunity and the transferable skills sought by employers.
Our Sixth Form students study a diverse combination of subjects at A Level, equipping them with the skills, knowledge and qualifications most in demand by universities and employers. As well as securing places to read a vast range of highly competitive subjects at the country’s top universities, a growing number of Yarm students are invited onto prestigious degree apprenticeships and training programmes.
Yarm School Sixth form offers students support both inside and outside the classroom from outstanding careers advice to unrivalled opportunities in sport, outdoor education, music, drama and more, providing the best possible preparation for life after Sixth Form.
The scholarships are means-tested, and candidates must secure a minimum of eight 7, 8 or 9 grades at GCSE. Joint parental income must be below £45,000.
Applicants will be required to sit a special assessment in the subjects to be studied at A Level in January 2022. The performance in these papers, and information from school reports and references will be used to shortlist for interviews.
Jonathan Walker, who attended Yarm Sixth Form on a science Scholarship in 2012-14, said: “Yarm School’s Sixth Form Scholarship completely changed my life. When I joined the School, I found myself for the first time being taught and mentored by passionate teachers who were willing to go above and beyond to enable their student’s learning and ultimately their success.
I left Yarm to study a bachelors in Physics and Masters in Computer Science at the University of Bath. Following graduation I joined Lloyds Banking Group on their Data Science Graduate Scheme and I have since rolled off the scheme as a Machine Learning Engineer. I now manage the release of AI solutions to fascinating and challenging financial problems.
I can say with confidence that I would not be where I am today if not for the unbelievable academic and extra-curricular support and opportunities that I was provided during my time at Yarm.”
Headmaster Huw Williams said: “I am proud that the Scholarships allow us to support motivated local young people with the drive and ambition to join our Sixth Form. “Yarm School Sixth Form excels academically and many of our leavers go on to study at prestigious universities across the country and read a diverse range of subjects including medicine, design, law, modern languages, music, business, economics, psychology, and engineering.
Post A Level opportunities are increasingly diverse here at Yarm and, whilst the majority of our students go to university, a number are supported in applications to alternative routes. In recent years, students have left Yarm to join the RAF, step into the world of work or embark on degree apprenticeships, and they do so with the skills needed to succeed and thrive.”
