Yarm School crowned national netball champions

Yarm School’s under-14 netball team is celebrating after being crowned National Champions at the England Netball National Schools final for the first time.

The prestigious tournament, held at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield, saw 18 of the country’s best school teams compete for the coveted title. Yarm’s U14 team demonstrated exceptional skill and teamwork throughout the tournament, winning an impressive six matches to secure second place in their group and earn a spot in the semi-finals.

The U14 team delivered an outstanding performance to win the semi-final against St Albans and advance to the final. The final match saw them face Brighton College, a formidable opponent who, despite losing to Yarm in their opening match, had previously topped Yarm’s group.

In a tense final with many chances, the match ended in extra time. Yarm managed to fight back to score two crucial goals, securing a thrilling victory and claim the title.

This achievement comes after finishing in third place last year. Three players who represented the Yarm U14 team in 2024 were able to return this year, still eligible by age, and experienced lifting the trophy.

Dr Huw Williams, Headmaster at Yarm School said: “This is an incredible achievement for the U14 girls, and all the coaches and staff involved.

“The entire school community is immensely proud of their success and enjoyed celebrating this historic win for the school.”

Miss Sam Cottrell, games teacher in charge of netball, said: “Their success is a testament to the countless hours of training, their passion for the sport, and their ability to rise to the occasion under pressure. I am incredibly proud of each and every one of them for making history for the school.”

The school’s success at national competitions is gaining momentum with both boys and girls hockey teams being crowned tier three national hockey champions in 2023 and 2024 respectively. In 2024, Yarm’s rowers qualified to compete at the prestigious Henley Royal Regatta.
