Yarm School’s A/A* Rates Far Exceed The National Average

In the first year when all A-Level results have been awarded using the more rigorous, linear exams, we’re celebrating our best A-Level results in several years. In fact, Yarm School has achieved the best A-Level results in Teesside and County Durham.

We are delighted to say that this year’s A*/A rates (55%) are not only above our five year average, but also more than double the national average of 25.5% and figures for the North East of 23%. This is an incredible achievement and we are extremely proud of all of our students for their hard work and dedication these last two years.

Our A* rate is also above our five year average at 23% and more than three times higher than the rate in the North East as a whole (6.7%). Over three quarters of all grades were awarded at a B grade or better, whilst one third of the students attained a clean sweep of A* or A*/ A grades.

Six of our students have been accepted to read at the prestigious and highly selective Universities of Oxford and Cambridge, with their courses ranging from Chemistry to Architecture. For the fifth year in a row, one of our students has a place to study German at Oxford.

High performing national standard rowers Hazel Wake and Sarah Portsmouth are amongst the students who have been accepted into the esteemed Oxbridge colleges. Hazel will be reading Biochemistry at St Edmund Hall, Oxford, whilst Sarah is heading to Newnham College, Cambridge to read Architecture. Could they be rowing against each other in a future boat race?

At least 14 students will go on to attend Medical Schools, with a further two studying Dentistry and one joining Edinburgh Veterinary School. Other courses include Engineering, Performing Arts, Classics, Agriculture, Humanities, Finance, Management, Teaching and Computer Science, many of which are at Russell Group Universities.

One half of the cohort took the Extended Project Qualification in addition to their three or four A-Levels, with an exceptional two thirds of these students achieving A* or A grades.;

Yarm School’s retiring Headmaster David Dunn and his successor Huw Williams were both thrilled with the results and praised the dedication of the students and the outstanding support of their teachers.

David said: “These excellent results cement Yarm School’s reputation as North East Independent Secondary School of The Year, as recognised by The Sunday Times.”
