The Boat Club at Yarm School boasts around 100 members. Rowing takes place throughout the year, although the main focus is in the Spring term, when boys and girls train together, split into three ability groups. In addition to the teaching staff, Yarm school employs a Boathouse Manager and professional coach. We are proud to report that Mr Andy Guest, Director of Sport at Yarm School, was named Northern Junior Rowing coach of the year in 2006. This year marks the 10th anniversary since the foundation of Yarm School Boat Club (YSBC) and we are planning a celebration dinner event on March 17th 2007. |

Established in 1997, YSBC is one of the most successful young clubs in the country, competing at the highest level both regionally and nationally. By 2002 a YSBC Eight had qualified for the Princess Elizabeth Challenge Cup at the prestigious Henley Royal Regatta, and won boys Junior Coxless Four at the National Schools Regatta. Yarm School junior sculling crews are regular finalists at National Schools championships. The highlights of the 2006 season were a win at the National School's regatta in the boys quad and a bronze in the girls Junior 15 double scull. At the National Championships, school representatives reached four finals, winning the boys Junior 18 singles and quads - our first win at this level was also recorded in the girls Junior 5 double scull, along with a new course record! |

Many Yarm School pupils go on to gain representative honours at regional level for the North, and 2005 saw our first pupils gain international selection in the Junior 16 category. In 2006, John Preston gained Great Britain recognition and four boys represented England in the Home Internationals. To cap a great year, Rachel Gamble-Flint smashed the British record for her age group at the National Indoor Championships. Already in 2007, YSBC member, Chris Boddy has rowed for Great Britain at the Youth Olympics in Sydney, Australia. |

Richard Boulton, GB Junior Coach, visited the school recently to drop in on a training session. Impressed by our achievements, he had this to say: “To achieve as much as YSBC has in the space of 10 years demonstrates commitment from the boys and girls, the staff and the school ethos. I was pleased to see the pupils enjoying their training, both on the water and in the gym. The numbers are healthy in all age groups and I have no doubt that Yarm will continue to thrive as a rowing school." |
