Entry Requirements
The Sixth Form at Yarm School has a strong academic ethos. Class sizes are small and the quality of teaching is very high. The pace of work is rapid and both good academic ability and an industrious approach are required if a pupil is to succeed.
In order to secure entry to the Sixth Form all pupils must meet our General Requirement and the Specific Requirements for the four subjects they wish to pursue at AS level. All pupils are required to take four subjects at AS level but may drop to three at A2. All pupils wishing to continue into the Sixth Form from Yarm School Fifth Year must have demonstrated the good work habits required for them to achieve their potential in the Sixth Form and that they are supportive of the Yarm School ethos.
The Sixth Form Interviews
Pupils who wish to join the Sixth Form from other schools are required to attend a interview. These take place throughout the year and places are offered to successful applicants shortly after the interview.
Applicants will be asked to bring to the interview some samples of their GCSE work in the subjects they are interested in studying at A-level. As a guide we would expect to see two pieces of work per subject. This work might include a portfolio, presentation, essay or a piece of project work. They will be invited to discuss this work with two members of staff and to talk generally about their ambitions and interests. A reference with predicted grades will have been requested from the current school. At the interview we are not trying to catch applicants out, but to check that they are making appropriate subject choices and would be well suited to our Sixth Form.
General Entry Requirement
Pupils who have followed GCSE courses are required to have:
* taken at least 8 subjects
* achieved grade C or better in Mathematics and English (Language).
* achieved the entry standard for at least 4 AS level subjects available to him/her in the option groups.
* achieved a mean score of 5.5 points, averaged over all of the GCSE subjects taken (where A* counts 8 points, A 7 points, B 6 points etc.)i.e. 4 B and 4 C grades would be just acceptable but 4 B, 3 C and 1 D grades would not.
Double award subjects count as two GCSE’s; we do not count GCSE short-course passes or other qualifications such as GNVQ in this average.
Specific Entry Requirement
Pupils must meet the specific entry requirement for each subject. In general a B grade at GCSE is required but for some subjects a higher grade would be expected. The requirements for each subject can be
