Life in the Sixth Form is busy and exciting with students making the most of all the extra-curricular activities on offer.
Two afternoons each week allow all students the opportunity to take part in sport. The major team sports are well-catered for with rugby, hockey and cricket for boys and hockey, netball and rounders for girls. Alongside these, rowing is a major interest for boys and girls and a whole host of other activities: football, squash, badminton, dance, tennis, lacrosse, swimming and more. The School’s recently refurbished Fitness Centre is fully equipped with all the kind of apparatus one would expect in a first rate gym. Tuesday and Thursday afternoons allow all the School’s pupils and Sixth Form students to take part in one of a wide range of activities such as Silversmithing, Chess, Film Appreciation, Baking, Bee-Keeping, Golf, Ballroom Dancing ... the list extends to more than fifty activities each week. Music plays a huge role in the life of the school and Sixth Form students are encouraged to develop their musical talents through lessons and performance in school. The Music Department pages give more information about the annual programme and the wide variety of ensembles as well as the availability of music tuition.
Drama productions throughout the year involve Sixth Form students either in performance, technical work or directing. There is at least one senior production annually and the opportunity to take part in such events as the Duologues competition. More details of forthcoming productions are detailed in the drama pages.
The School has a thriving programme supporting students in attaining the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. Members of the Sixth Form will regularly complete Silver or even Gold Award during their time at Yarm. For more details click here.
Yarm School is fortunate to have a full-time Outdoor Education specialist, Ric van Opstal, on the staff. Mr van Opstal, supported by other members of staff, organises a wide programme of activities involving walking, climbing, caving, canoeing and kayaking. Members of the Sixth Form play a key role in the school’s Combined Cadet Force and are often promoted to become the senior NCO’s. The Army and Royal Air Force sections are both flourishing and provide a range of exciting activities. The CCF pages of the website provide more information.
