Career Advice
The Head of Careers, Mr S H A Crabtree, is always available to talk to pupils and their parents about any aspect of careers guidance and education.
The Careers programme at Yarm school is detailed below.
3rd Year
- Spring Term
Introduction into careers research and subject choice for GCSE.
Introduction to the careers room and resources, including the school network and the internet.
- Summer Term
Completion of careers file. Each pupil is expected to research a number of different career areas, and to complete a personal file entry for each one. This work continues in the Fourth Form.
4th Year
- Summer Term
Pupils and their parents are introduced to the Independent Schools Careers Organisation (ISCO), with the majority opting for membership.
5th Year
- Autumn Term
ISCO Morrisby testing for ISCO members.
ISCOPE testing in school for non-ISCO pupils.
Morrisby test feedback and individual interviews.
Non-ISCO pupils have individual interviews with a local Connexions adviser.
The Careers Department plays a full part in the "introduction to the Sixth form" programme. This continues throughout the year.
- Spring Term
Follow-up interviews for ISCO members.
Summer Term
All members of the Fifth form are encouraged to complete some worthwhile work experience during the long summer break.
The Careers Department provides support for pupils on GCSE results day, and in the weeks leading up to the start of term.
Lower Sixth
- Autumn Term
ISCO Career Experience courses available to all members of the L6.
Follow-up interviews for ISCO members.
- Spring Term
All students participate in the Coursefinder scheme as a starting point for research into UCAS choices.
Introduction to the careers room and resources, including the school network and the internet, (specifically the CourseDiscover software).
An after A-levels evening for students and their parents.
- Summer Term
Coursefinder questionnaire follow up work in tutorial time.
University Open Day visits.
All members of the L6 are encouraged to complete some worthwhile work experience during the long summer break.
Upper Sixth
- Autumn Term
The Careers Department plays a full part in supporting students in their UCAS applications. This includes -
Careers interviews for all.
Support with UCAS forms and the Personal Statements. UCAS forms are all submitted electronically.
Mock interviews and preparation for interview.
Personal support and guidance for students from a subject specific adviser.
In addition, every other year we run a highly successful Careers Convention. This event is open to all pupils and their parents, and is supported by a wide range of professionals from different career areas, together with up to twelve different Universities.
