Theatre Studies
T D J Pender, BA (Head of Department)
Theatre Studies is immensely rewarding and challenging. It places demands on a diversity of skills, both academic and practical. Over the course, students develop an understanding of how performers, designers and directors communicate meaning to an audience, and how to form judgements of their own about live theatre. They must work creatively and collaboratively to achieve shared dramatic intentions in the realisation of their own performances, and they learn how to convey ideas clearly and coherently.
Assessment at AS is by: written examination on one live production seen and studied during the course and one play text; and by the group performance of a scripted play, supported by a written portfolio.
While a great deal of the work is practical, there is also an emphasis on reading, thinking creatively, working collaboratively and responding in an appropriate written form. Students are expected to attend rehearsals outside of lesson times and go on regular theatre visits.
Students considering this subject should have enjoyed some success at GCSE English and ideally have some previous involvement in drama, although there have been successful students in the past whose genuine willingness to participate in practical work has compensated for their inexperience.
Whilst offering a genuine academic challenge, the course is wonderfully creative and enjoyable. For full details speak to Mr Pender.
