These demanding yet highly rewarding AS and A2 level courses require a B Grade or above at GCSE.  The ability to be self-motivated and act on your own initiative is essential, as is the willingness to experiment with materials and respond enthusiastically to assignments.  In both the AS and A-level courses, students will be encouraged to develop their own interests in techniques, media and subject matter.

Both courses involve practical, skill-based studies, preparatory work and Art History research.  AS level requires course work and a final examination and A2 level requires course work, a Personal Study and an examination.

Students will have the opportunity to develop skills in drawing, painting, print-making, textiles and computer graphics and will be expected to work both at home and at school in their free time.

Visits to galleries support the work of the students and are an important element of the course with visits to London and elsewhere to see major and minor exhibitions.  Students are also expected to visit galleries independently and it is hoped that students will participate fully in the life and work of the department.

The Art Department is situated at the top of The Friarage building and occupies a very pleasant and sunny suite of rooms including two dedicated Sixth Form studios.  It enjoys splendid views and has a friendly and supportive atmosphere.
