Tennis
Tennis report from 2009-2010 Magazine
Tennis is played throughout the school with all pupils having the opportunity to play in the summer term in both activities and games lessons. The recent addition of three synthetic courts in addition to the existing seven courts have made the facilities amongst the best the in the region.
The tennis season is always very busy with many boys and girls involved in the teams across all ages. As well as competing in the Cleveland League and cup competitions, we enter teams in Bradford Grammar School’s invitational tournament and into the North of England Championships. We currently hold the trophy for U12’s and are plate holders in the other three ages that play, U14, U16, & U19.
In recent years, we have entered The National Independent Schools’ Championships at Eton College, which is an elite competition and runs over four days in June/July.
One of the highlights of this competition was the boys U13 doubles of John Phellas and Stephen Alexander, who performed incredibly well to reach the final. This was an outstanding effort, made all the more impressive when we consider that they pushed their opponents all the way to a tie-break, which they agonisingly just lost.
We have several nationally ranked players including LTA sponsored players. Several pupils have moved on to take up full time Tennis scholarships.
