Rowing

Rowing report from 2009-2010 magazine.

Henley RegattaThe Boat Club at Yarm School boasts around 100 members. Rowing takes place throughout the year, although the main focus is in the Spring Term, when boys and girls train together, split into three ability groups. In addition to the teaching staff, Yarm School employs a Boathouse Manager.

Recent recognition of the success of the club came with Andy Guest and Andy Clark being named Northern Junior Rowing coaches of the year in 2006 and 2008. In 2008 the coaching team was strengthened with the role of a part time professional coach to run the senior crews.

Like many aspects of the School, the boat club is still very new - 2008 was the 10th anniversary of the foundation of Yarm School Boat Club (YSBC), celebrated by a dinner attended by many former pupils.

YSBC is one of the most successful young clubs in the country, competing at the highest level both regionally and nationally.  By 2002, a YSBC Eight had qualified for the Princess Elizabeth Challenge Cup at the prestigious Henley Royal Regatta, and the Boys Junior Coxless Four came first at the National Schools Regatta.

Yarm School junior sculling crews are regular finalists at National Schools Championships.  Highlights include a win at the National Schools Regatta in the championship boys quad in 2006, which was then retained in 2007. In 2009 the girls narrowly missed matching this with a silver in the championship girls' quads. Individual success has also been recorded with John Preston winning the championship singles in 2007 and Rachel Gamble-Flint winning the girls' singles in 2010.

Andrew Brown - Bronze medal - Coupe de la JeunesseMany Yarm School pupils go on to gain representative honours at regional level for the North. Since 2006, Yarm has always had representation in the GB junior teams, including four pupils who rowed for team GB at the Youth Olympics, Sydney.

This year two former pupils have raced at the Under 23 World Championships with Ben Rowe winning a silver medal. Chris Boddy is currently representing the senior team at the 2010 World Championships. During the 2010-11 season two former pupils, Ben Rowe and Catherine Copeland are involved in regular coaching sessions with the senior crews.

Richard Boulton, GB Junior Coach, visited the School recently to drop in on a training session.  Impressed by our achievements, he had this to say:

"To achieve as much as YSBC has in the space of 10 years demonstrates commitment from the boys and girls, the staff and the School ethos.  I was pleased to see the pupils enjoying their training, both on the water and in the gym.  The numbers are healthy in all age groups and I have no doubt that Yarm will continue to thrive as a rowing school."
