Rugby

Rugby report from 2009-2010 Magazine

Like the school itself, Yarm's rugby has come a long way in its relatively short history, playing a significant role in helping establish the excellent reputation that the school presently enjoys.

Old Boys are currently found playing professional Rugby at the highest levels; notably Anthony Elliot who represented England in the IRB Sevens and Simon Webster in the IRB 2007 World Cup for Scotland.

Pupils are regularly selected to represent both Durham and Yorkshire Counties and the North of England. A number of boys have represented the newly formed Independent School's Barbarians, with Toby Lawson being a member of their inaugural tour to America where they beat the USA Eagles U19's. We have established good links with the Newcastle Falcons, where several boys are members of their Academy.  One of whom, Zach Kibirige, has recently represented England U17’s.

Rugby is the major sport played amongst the Northern HMC schools and we have established a demanding fixture list, which regularly sees Yarm competing against tough opposition such as Leeds GS, Woodhouse Grove and Hymers College, not to mention local rivals Barnard Castle and Durham School.

As well as engaging in these fixtures, we regularly enter county and national fifteen and seven-a-side competitions, enjoying success in both. Yarm School regularly competes in the latter stages of the Durham County Cups at both 15 and 7 aside.

Since 2002 the senior Rugby squad has embarked on an ambitious international tour every two years. The first of these tours was to New Zealand and The Cook Islands, followed by Argentina and Chile in 2004, South Africa and Namibia in 2006 and New Zealand and Australia in 2008. The tours provide a fantastic opportunity for pupils to develop their skills and techniques. The summer of 2011 will see the next Rugby tour depart to Australia, playing fixtures in Sydney, Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Townsville and finishing in Cairns.

Junior Rugby tours are also arranged so that all pupils are given the opportunity to take part in a mini-tour at least twice during their first five years at the school.  Recent destinations for junior squads have included France, Scotland and Ireland.
