Sports

The activities programmes described in our extracurricular pages are designed to dovetail with the formal structure of the School’s Physical Education and Games provision. Specific information about this provision is sent to parents separately in the Information for New Pupils booklet which gives details of the PE curriculum, the annual programme of sports followed and the School’s arrangements for team practices and school fixtures.

In its short history, Yarm School has established a fine reputation for excellence in several sports. PE and Games is taught by a team of subject specialists and we also employ a number of professional coaches. Pupils have the opportunity to participate in a wide range of both team and individual sports. Many pupils go on to represent Yarm School and some even gain county and national honours. Please see the page of recent honours and colours for details.

Mr David Tanner, GB Rowing Performance Director, opens the new fitness suiteYarm School has an excellent range of sporting facilities and continues to invest in this important area of school life. In addition to the Sports Hall, in which many sports and PE are taught, pupils enjoy access to a recently refurbished fitness room. There are extensive opportunities to participate in outdoor sports such as Hockey, Netball, Tennis and Cricket on our state-of-the-art Astroturf pitch or our newly laid polymeric surfaces. Rugby, Football, Rounders and Athletics are played on pitches at the nearby Aislaby and Green Lane sports complexes. The School is very fortunate to border the River Tees, on which Canoeing and Rowing are practised to very high levels.

Most sports have teams that compete in fixtures and competitions against the other schools in the region. Matches take place both during the week and at weekends, usually on Saturdays, and it is expected that pupils will normally be available to represent their School as and when called upon to do so. We achieve considerable success in these fixtures and our pupils are proud to wear the school colours.
