Year Groups
The Senior School spans the National Curriculum ages from First Year (Year 7) to Upper Sixth (Year 13). At Yarm, the year groups are referred to as First, Second, Third, Fourth and Fifth Year, Lower Sixth and Upper Sixth Form. Each year group is led by a Head of Year.
When a pupil joins a given year group, they become part of a Tutor Group. Each group has a dedicated tutor who provides the initial, key point of contact with parents, to discuss any concerns.
For each year group from First to Fifth Year there are four tutor groups, each of approximately twenty four pupils. In the Sixth Form these groups are subdivided to form eight tutor groups so as to allow for more individual attention in the crucial years of A-Levels and university applications.
There is a specialist team of tutors for the First Year, but thereafter tutors often remain with their tutor group for more than one year, getting to know individuals very well.
Heads of Year co-ordinate the work of tutors in their year and oversee the monitoring of pupils’ welfare and academic progress, with the Head of Middle School and the Head of Sixth Form providing another level of support for pupils and parents. Their names and contact details are given on the Pastoral Contacts page.
