Outdoor Education

The term ‘Outdoor Education’ encompasses a wide range of life skills and experiences, from understanding the physics of fire starting to the physiological anxieties experienced when jumping off a rock into the a cold lake below!

Outdoor Education has developed into a key part of the Yarm School extra-curricular provision. We offer students a vast variety of experiences. Recent experiences have ranged from: local walking trips in the North York Moors, the sun kissed rock of Joshua tree in the USA, open canoeing on the River Tees (in the school grounds) on a summer’s afternoon to crossing Scotland on wild rivers. The opportunities and ultimately the benefits from such experiences are second to none.

Yarm School employs a full-time and highly qualified Outdoor Education specialist who organises the events, rather than using external companies, ensuring that the students receive the best experiences.

The programmes offered are progressive and all age groups are catered for. General activity lessons are the starting point for most pupils, learning basic outdoor skills, such as rope work, fire lighting, camp craft, raft building.

The School is continuing to develop its Outdoor Education programme and currently under development is the woodland within the grounds as a resource for both the Senior and Prep School curriculum.
