Psychology
We are all social beings who need to understand other people - so Psychology has universal relevance. Psychology offers a fresh area of study to Sixth Formers.
Uses of Psychology
- Any career where people interact as customers, clients or work colleagues (ie. all of them!) needs knowledge of Psychology. An increasing number of professional courses such as medicine, law and management include Psychology.
- Psychology is accepted as an entrance qualification across the range of arts and science subjects. It does not limit choice
- Psychology teaches understanding of people's feelings and what motivates and influences them as well as the causes and consequences of behaviour. Application of this knowledge helps individuals to plan and control their lives.
- Psychological research teaches the most efficient ways to study and revise.
What you see in the below figure depends on whether you choose black or white as your foreground. This in turn depends on habit and education.

The AS and A Level Course
At AS level, students study the 5 major areas of Psychology - social, cognitive, developmental, physiological and abnormal - by the description, evaluation and ethics of 20 key studies covering the range of contemporary and classical research such as Freud and Zimbardo (the basis of the recent T.V. series "The Experiment)
At A level, two areas of Applied Psychology are studied in depth. These are chosen, after discussion with students, from Psychology of Health, Environment, Education, Organisation, Sport, and Crime. In both years students carry out individual practical research.
