Politics

Politics is offered at Yarm School as an AS and A2 Subject. The syllabus followed is Edexcel : Government and Politics (8067 / 9067-70)

The Department strives to convey a sense of fun combined with a rigorous academic approach to the subject. In the Lower Sixth a core British Politics Syllabus is offered : Unit 1 : People and politics; Unit 2: Governing the UK; Unit 3: The Changing UK System. Key British political institutions are studied along with topical issues for example Electoral reform, Devolution, the Impact of the European Union and the 'ideology' of the Political Parties. The Department encourages self learning, the use of ICT and the ability to make informed judgements. An inquiring, challenging mind is essential!

For the Upper Sixth, the course moves to more theoretical and abstract subject matter. The A2 syllabus consists of a study of the mainstream Political ideologies - Socialism (and Communism), Liberalism, Conservatism (Unit 4B). The next unit (Unit 5B) introduces students to other more radical ideologies - Feminism, Anarchism, Fascism (and Nazism) and Nationalism. The synoptic module (Unit 6B) ties together the AS and A2 course, with a look at the main ideological developments in the UK since 1945, especially since 1979.

There is no coursework involved and no-one needs to belong to a political party to study Politics! The course involves much discussion work, keeping abreast of current affairs and seminar style lessons. There are plenty of opportunities to attend Politics lectures in London and to listen to guest speakers at school.
