PE

Our aim is that all pupils leave Yarm School having had a positive and enjoyable experience of the physical education programme. The skills and understanding they acquire will enable them to follow a healthy lifestyle long after they have left school. As a traditional school, team games and the ethos behind them, form the background to our physical education programme. They are a fundamental part of the general school ethos and as such are viewed as part of our core curriculum. We attempt to establish a balance between breadth and depth; balancing commitments to the sports we focus on each term in games lessons, and the wish to give pupils a wide and varied physical education through the timetabled lessons and activities.

The major Games for each term are supported with a comprehensive fixture list, and team players are expected to attend weekly team practices and matches. In addition to this, the weekly activities sessions allow pupils to undertake a wide range of sports that in many cases will have been initially covered in their P.E. Lessons. A full break down of the curriculum can be found in the curriculum booklet. In games lessons at certain times in the year pupils are given a degree of choice of sports. This can vary according to the weather, but we always aim to cover as much of the programme as possible.

The School has an excellent Sports Hall in which many sports and P.E. are taught.  The redevelopment project at the school added additional facilities: a dance studio and a second astro pitch. There is also a recently refurbished fitness room with specific weight and cardio vascular training areas.  There are extensive all-weather outdoor playing facilities for  tennis, netball, cricket and hockey, while football and rugby are played at our nearby Green Lane and Aislaby pitches. The School is very fortunate to be beside the River Tees, which borders The Friarage. Both canoeing and rowing are practiced to very high levels..

PE is taught by a team of PE specialists and other academic subject staff, in addition we employ professional coaches in rowing, hockey and cricket.

In both PE and games lessons we are keen to monitor the progress that pupils make in a wide range of sports. To allow pupils to analyse their own performance and identify their strengths and weaknesses individual sport level descriptors are used (see below).

GCSE PE was introduced in 2000 and is proving very popular course, with 92% achieving A*-B.  In 2005-6 AS and A2 Physical Education was introduced. At AS level, the average grades over three years are A/B grade: 59% and at A2 88% achieved an A*-B grade. In 2010-11 30% gained an A*. Many pupils have gone on to study sports related degree courses at university.
