History

History is a very successful and popular subject at Yarm School with many pupils opting to study it at GCSE, A Level and at degree level. There are six members of the History Department offering their enthusiasm and specialist knowledge.

In the First to Third Year, pupils study a broad range of topics from Medieval Britain through to the Twentieth Century. In the First Year, pupils study Medieval British History, including the Battle of Hastings, the Black Death and the Peasant’s Revolt. In the Second Year the focus is in on Crown, Parliaments and People (1500-1750) and in the Third Year, pupils study the themes of Revolution, Empire and Rights. In all three years, skills are developed, knowledge from Key Stage 2 is extended and a solid preparation for GCSE is made.

For GCSE the Department follows the OCR Modern World Syllabus B (c1906-1945) and it is invariably the most popular option subject. As part of the course, in Fourth Year, all students participate in the annual Battlefields tour to Belgium and France where First World War sites are studied around Ypres, the Somme and Vimy ridge.

At A level the Department follows the AQA course. Sets may take different topics according to the interest and expertise of the teachers but the Department is committed to offering a mixture of early and modern periods to all sets. At A2 level all pupils take a popular coursework option with considerable scope for individual choice.
