Economics
You might like to keep abreast of current affairs and think you know what’s going on in the world, but if you don’t know Economics you won’t know why. For example:
* Why are footballers, actors and pop stars paid such high sums for their jobs?
* Why should Britain adopt the Euro as its currency instead of keeping the Pound?
* Why does everybody love or hate Tesco more than any other enterprise?
While most peoples’ idea of Economics is all to do with inflation and unemployment, we will provide answers to the above issues and many more. The subject also looks at a much greater range of issues with those above just touching the tip of the iceberg.
At Yarm School Economics is only offered as an A level subject to the Sixth Form. We follow the AQA exam specification, sitting both AS units in June of the lower sixth and both A2 units in January of the upper sixth. Any resits will be taken will be sat in June of the upper sixth. There is no coursework.
We strive to develop an interest and a curiosity in the subject as well as an academic understanding. Much of our class time is devoted to discussion led as much by the students as by the teachers. For their part students should have an interest in current affairs and the economy around them and an enquiring and challenging mind. In an ideal world a B grade in GCSE Maths and English Language will also be required.
