Business Studies

Virtually everything you do in life is connected with business.  Our students are currently being educated, and will always be educated, by a business.  When your finish your education, if you work, you will be employed by a business; it might be your own or someone else’s, but it will be a business.  If you are not well you will be looked after by a business.  And when you die a business will arrange your funeral.

Most people see businesses as making something, selling it for a profit and doing it all over again.  While this is undoubtedly true for the majority of businesses, there are many businesses which don’t fit into this routine and many issues and decisions businesses face during this process.  For example:

* How have businesses coped during the recession?

* How does Virgin manage to be involved in just about everything?

In Business Studies we will provide answers to these and many other questions as well as an understanding of how businesses are set up and the different operations they have to perform to keep running.

At Yarm School Business Studies is offered as an IGCSE to Fourth and Fifth Years and as an A level subject to the Sixth Form.   We follow the Edexcel IGCSE specification and the AQA specification at A level.  The IGCSE course is linear with the exam being sat in the June of the Fifth Year.  For the A level both AS units are sat in June of the Lower Sixth and both A2 units in January of the Upper Sixth.  Any resits will be sat in June of the Upper Sixth.  In both courses the exams are very much case study based with short and longer answer questions and there is no coursework.

Our aim is to develop an appreciation of the business world and an interest in the subject as well as an academic understanding.  Much of our class time is devoted to discussion led as much by the students as by the teachers.  For their part students should have an interest in current affairs and the business world around them and an enquiring and challenging mind.  In an ideal world a B grade in GCSE Maths and English Language will also be required.
