Sports
Sport is seen as an important part of school life, particularly as it gives children the opportunity to develop team skills and develop a healthy lifestyle for the future. Yarm at Raventhorpe has strong links with Mowden Park Rugby Football Club and uses its facilities for some games lessons and activity clubs.
The major sports played by boys in school play rugby, football, hockey and cricket, whilst girls play netball, hockey and rounders. However, both boys and girls also have the chance to play basketball and tennis, girls sometimes play rugby and football, and boys are also chosen for mixed netball teams.
The School plays in matches against local schools and also against other small independent schools in the area. The children in Years 5 and 6 go to Yarm for their games afternoon each week, which gives them experience of competitive team playing and the chance to play in combined Prep School teams against other major schools.
All children, from Nursery upwards, have a PE lesson each week and children in Key Stage 2 go swimming weekly. Swimming is a strength of the School and in recent years the School has had winning teams in the Darlington Small Schools Swimming Competition which have then gone on to compete at a the national championships.
A range of sports activity clubs are offered every week. Cross Country Running Club has become extremely popular and, once again, children have finished exceptionally well in local inter-schools cross country events and have represented Darlington in the area championships.
