Trips and Excursions

Teachers plan visits outside school for each class every term to enhance and enrich topics they are teaching.   Trips to the theatre, to museums, to houses and sites of historical interest, to look at aspects of the locality around school and to take part in workshops are a regular feature of school life from Nursery upwards.   Recent exciting trips have included visits to The Sage, Gateshead, a trip to the Ryedale Folk Museum, the Oriental Museum in Durham and to workshops at the Centre for Life in Newcastle and the Baltic Museum for Contemporary Art.  Theatre trips have included going to see ‘The Gruffalo’ and ‘The Hobbit’.

Children within Key Stage 2 are offered residential trips.  Children in Years 3 and 4 generally spend one night away from home, whilst the older children will be away for two or three nights.  The trips are seen as a vital way of helping children gain independence and valuable for team building within year groups.  Recent trips have included visits to the fieldwork centre at Crandale, a city trip to Edinburgh and activity trips to the Lake District and Northumberland.  Year 6 undertook an expedition by river to Yarm in the summer term last year, and the current Year 6 group are looking forward to doing the same!

On all trips children travel by school minibus, coach or occasionally train, depending upon the size of the group.  Staff ratios are generous when children travel outside school and thorough trip planning and risk assessments are undertaken to ensure children’s safety whilst off the school site.
