Foundation Stage

Starting Nursery is a major event in the lives of young children and we aim to make the experience a happy one.  Children may start in Nursery at any time after reaching three years of age, although most join at the beginning of the Autumn, Spring or Summer terms.  We offer flexible care and children may attend for half days, whole days or full time.  Our excellent Nursery staff are very good at helping children to settle and work in close partnership with parents.  Nursery is a busy and exciting place to be, having both a beautifully equipped indoor space and access to a wonderful garden just outside.  The staff plan lots of activities in this outdoor area and encourage children to use it to the full.

Nursery children progress to Reception, which adjoins the Nursery classroom, as they start their school career.  Other children join the School at this stage.  The introduction of more formal learning is blended with play-based learning, so that every child is keen to come into school each day.

Our Nursery and Reception classes plan and work closely together to form an Early Years Foundation Stage Unit and whilst both classes have their own form staff, the children combine at times to give them a breadth of experience and to allow their full needs to be met.  Thus Nursery children may join children learning to read in Reception if they are ready to do so and children in Reception needing more time gaining, for example, the manual dexterity necessary for early writing, may access activities in Nursery to this end.  This is considered the very best practice for the Early Years Foundation Stage and we are proud of the provision we offer.  The setting was judged outstanding by Ofsted in June 2008.

As a registered provider of Early Years Education in Darlington, we follow the curriculum guidance for the Early Years Foundation Stage, working towards, and sometimes beyond, the Early Learning Goals.  For example, children in both Nursery and Reception enjoy a twice-weekly ‘Fun French’ session.  The School completes the Foundation Stage Profile for each child at the end of Reception.
