Curricular Physical Education and Games
All P.E. lessons are taught in form groups of mixed sex and ability. Work is differentiated to include all pupils and ensure that each child is progressing.
Games lessons are taught in year groups and are also differentiated to suit varying abilities. Boys’ and Girls’ Games are generally taught separately although there may be a crossover for some sports such as tennis and athletics.
In P.E. children are given excellent support, often with two members of staff in each lesson. In Games, pupils are regularly streamed to target particular skills. Within these bands children are given dedicated coaching to improve their performance and acquire new techniques. This is true for pupils working below the expected level of achievement as well as the many gifted and talented pupils we have. There is plenty of time within lessons to teach in small groups and/or one to one for those children who will benefit from this.
We continually stress the importance of the social and health-related benefits of sport to the children in Games and P.E lessons, believing that sport should be accessible for everyone at Yarm Preparatory School. The Activities programme and after school clubs allow us to expand on the range of sport offered as well as helping the pupils to gain a suitable amount of regular, physical exercise.
