Stephenson
Stephenson House is named after George Stephenson, the famous railway engineer. Stephenson was most famous for his steam engines, ‘Locomotion No. 1’ and ‘The Rocket’. He was born in 1781 and died in 1848. Although Stephenson didn’t go to school as a young boy, he was very observant and keen to learn how things worked. When he started helping his father, working in local coal mines, he realised that he wanted to educate himself further. He went to night classes after work to learn how to read, write and calculate. He began to experiment in making steam engines and soon became successful. His engine, ‘Locomotion No. 1’ ran on the Darlington to Stockton Railway. In 1829, his revolutionary new design for a steam engine, ‘The Rocket’, won a competition to run on the Manchester to Liverpool line. Stephenson became famous across Britain and beyond. Pupils in Stephenson are encouraged to aim high and improve their achievements, just as George Stephenson did. We hope that they will enjoy working hard in all areas of school, showing patience, good manners and the will to succeed for themselves and their house.
