A Level results – records smashed again!

Pupils at Yarm School are celebrating record-breaking A-Level passes as their results were published this morning.

Of all the examinations taken by Yarm School pupils, a phenomenal 83% were awarded an A or B grade, smashing last years performance by over 15%!  Overall, the pass rate was 100% again, with a staggering 95% of all papers achieving the benchmark A-C grade – up 8% on last year.

The extraordinary set of results particularly pleased Headmaster, David Dunn, as they are based largely on traditional subjects like Mathematics,  the Sciences and languages – considered key indicators of success by Universities and the CBI.

He commented: “The quality of this year’s results surpassed even my expectations, and it’s great that pupils have received such good grades in subjects that are seen to be more rigourous and challenging.  One third of our outgoing Upper Sixth Form sat Mathematics A Levels – 20 out of 24 of them received A grades.  I already have three letters from the exam board congratulating pupils on their performance in scoring one of the top 10 marks in the country.  5 pupils took Further Mathematics, recording 4 A grades and one B.

“Pupils also recorded a very strong set of results in Science, while everyone who sat a Language A Level was awarded an A or a B grade.”

An incredible 25% of the year group was awarded straight A grades, and virtually all pupils will go on to University next year, a good proportion of them heading to Oxbridge and highly respected Red Brick Universities.

Particularly pleased with his results is Paul Stubley, of Marton, last year’s head of school, who attained 5 straight A grades and follows in his elder brothers’ footsteps to study at Oxford, where he will read Physics at Worcester College.  Joining him at Oxford are twins Matthew and Jonathan Cornford from Nunthorpe.   Both gained the necessary grades to study their chosen subjects – Classics for Matthew at Lady Margaret Hall, Physiological Science for Jonathan at Keble College. Congratulations, too, to Gavin Fourie, who attained 5 straight A grades, and was given a letter from the exam board informing him he had scored one of the top 10 marks in the country in his Further Maths paper.  Gavin is looking forward to starting a Physics degree at Brasenose College, Oxford.

The wait for results has been an anxious one for Bethany Longstaff of Middlesbrough.  Earlier this year the exam board lost one of her History papers, causing her a considerable amount of stress!  After some strong representation on her behalf from Yarm School, and the appropriate consideration from the Examination board, Bethany was awarded an A grade, and now goes on to study English at Exeter University.

YARM SCHOOL BREAKS INTO UK TOP 50

On the back of a tremendous set of examination results, Yarm School is celebrating its inclusion in the independents Schools’ Council (ISC) GCSE league tables published in the Times and Daily Telegraph.

For the first time ever, the performance of Yarm School’s pupils has merited a place in the top 50 schools in the country! This reinforces our reputation as the top school in the region, either single-sex or co-educational.

We are delighted that our pupils’ and staffs’ efforts have been rewarded these tables, as the Government persist in ignoring the more challenging International GCSE for its own tables, thus penalising the school despite many IGCSE pupils attaining A*’s.

Our Pupils study traditional subjects, like languages and individual Sciences, so deserve real praise for their outstanding results.
