for details of the Ogden Sixth-Form Science Scholarships)
Entry into the School is normally at ages 4, 5, 7, 11, 13 and 16.
Entry at other stages is possible, subject to availability of places.
All pupils entering the Senior School are required to take an Entrance
Assessment in Maths and English. Satisfactory performance
in this, together with good school reports are
necessary for a place to be offered. Pupils entering the Sixth Form
are required to reach a satisfactory standard in their GCSE exams.
Scholarships
A wide variety of scholarships is offered. Scholarships are awarded
competitively on merit and the value can be as high as one third of
the tuition fees.
11+ Scholarships are held for 5 years and are awarded on the results
of the Scholarship Examination. Only those of outstanding ability are
likely to qualify for one of the major awards but a number of
lesser awards are also made. The Preparatory School likewise has a
number of scholarships available to pupils of outstanding ability.
Sixth Form Scholarships are awarded on the basis of GCSE results.
Music Scholarships are also offered. There are no age limits but
of course the pupil's age is taken into account. Auditions normally
take place each February.
Bursaries
The School provides Bursary assistance to
- Allow children whose parents do not have enough income/assets to pay full fees to benefit from education at Yarm School.
- Assist parents of existing pupils whose circumstances deteriorate and are no longer able to make full payment.
It must be recognised that funds are limited and their allocation must
support both existing and new bursaries. The amount to be set aside for
assistance is determined each year during the budgeting round and,
like all other expenditure, impacts on operating costs and must be
governed by overall financial policy and restraints.
The School advertises that bursaries are available and the admission
process will highlight children who would benefit from the experience
of education at Yarm School. The level of individual assistance is not
restricted and it may be possible to have all tuition fees waived;
more normally, however, the parents would be expected to pay for part
of the school fees.
To determine the level of assistance it is necessary to have a full
understanding of the financial position of the family and so background
financial information is needed. An application form is available which
is designed to summarise this information and determine the level of
net resources available. Documentary evidence is required to verify
the statements given in the application. All information is treated
as confidential.
The level of assistance is determined by the net income available to the
family. In calculating net income, earnings, less tax, NI contributions
and pension payments are considered. Additionally the application form
asks the applicants to provide a note of their net assets (market value
of any investment, house, level of bank deposits less outstanding loans
and mortgages) and a notional income can be determined from this.
Each case is reviewed individually and all circumstances considered
including the number of dependent children in the family. As a guide,
any family with net income (i.e. after tax) above £40,000 will not,
normally, qualify for assistance. Below that level there is a sliding
scale for support. At a net income of £25,000 around 50% of the fees
would be rebated. However, it must be remembered that bursary funding
is limited and it may be necessary to restrict funds or levels of award
when demand is high.
Please do not hesitate to contact us if you wish to discuss a possible
Bursary application.
