Academic Excellence

It is the aim of the School to produce pupils of good all-round ability who will be useful members of society. First and foremost, the School insists upon high standards of personal discipline and upon a co-operative and unselfish attitude from its pupils.

Second, the School looks to all pupils to make the most of their academic opportunities and talents. The standard aimed for is high. The teaching staff are well qualified and experienced. Whilst it is true that there is more to education than the passing of examinations, the School believes that good qualifications are a necessity of modern life. Accordingly, it tries to imbue each pupil with a desire to accept this challenge and to benefit from it.

Third, the School sets out to provide each pupil with the necessary breadth of education so that personality can be developed to its fullest extent. Great stress is laid upon doing things well for their own sake: the pursuit of excellence. Sportsmanship, athletic ability, musical and artistic talents, craftsmanship and an appreciation of the 'great outdoors' are values which are given every encouragement.

Curriculum and choices

Our main philosophy is that pupils should experience a broad range of subjects and that "doors should be kept open" for as long as possible. In the First Year the following subjects are studied: English, Maths., Science, French, Computing, Latin, History, Geography, Religious Studies, Design & Technology, Art, Music and PSHE.

In the Second Year pupils continue to study the same subjects, but Science is now taught separately as Biology, Chemistry and Physics. In the Third Year, a small degree of choice is introduced. Pupils choose from options including Art, Classics, DT, Latin, Music and Spanish. Towards the end of this year pupils and parents are consulted about which subjects are to be studied to GCSE level. In the Fourth and Fifth Years pupils follow their GCSE courses. Most study English Language and English Literature and all three separate Sciences together with Maths and a Modern Language. To this 'core' of seven subjects are added at least three options from a wide choice of alternatives.
Throughout the School teachers monitor the progress of each individual closely. In some subjects, notably English, Maths and Modern Languages, pupils are taught in sets according to their ability. The standard class size is about 18 - 22. The School provides Learning Support and English as a Foreign Language teaching for those who need it, for which an additional charge is normally made.

Most of our pupils proceed into the Sixth Form, although a minimum satisfactory performance at GCSE is required. In the Lower Sixth we encourage pupils to take at least four Advanced Supplementary (AS) levels and in the Upper Sixth at least three A2's. In addition, nearly every pupil is prepared for and takes General Studies at A level.
