World War Two Theme Day
Friday 11 November 2011
Children at Yarm at Raventhorpe had great fun taking part in our World War II theme day.

With true wartime spirit, everyone rallied around to come to school dressed appropriately. Many of the children had made gas mask cases and had evacuee labels tied to their clothes, whilst others brought props such as battered suitcases and teddy bears. Staff were dressed as members of the armed forces and land girls, among other things.
The windows were taped against the possibility of bomb blasts, an air raid shelter was constructed in Nursery and new door signs had appeared throughout the building. Lunchtime brought a menu of vegetable soup, toad-in-the-hole, Lord Woolton pie and cabbage, followed by summer pudding and custard. Yummy! Years 5 and 6, who visited Eden Camp museum earlier in the week, took the lead in organising the day as part of their World War II topic and presented an informative assembly for the rest of the School.
Headmaster, David Boddy, said, “It was wonderful to see history brought so vividly to life in school; the day really helped the children to empathise with the wartime experiences of their grandparents and great-grandparents.”
