Record High - A levels

Thursday 18 August 2011

The results highlight another extremely successful year at Yarm School. The percentage of A* grades was up on last year to 18.3%, in their second year of existence. The percentage A*-B has increased by 7% on last year’s figure to 84.3% and the number of UCAS points per student has increased significantly. This year, again, a large percentage of pupils have gained entry on to competitive medicine and dentistry courses, 14% out of a cohort of 93.

An Ogden Scholar at Yarm School, is celebrating after achieving three A*’s and one A grade at A level.

Matthew Dover joined Yarm School from Unity City Academy on a 100% Ogden Trust Science Scholarship after displaying a natural talent for science.  After an excellent Sixth Form career, Matthew has been accepted to study Physics at Manchester University. He achieved three A* grades in Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics and an A grade in Further Mathematics.

Each year Yarm School offers two Ogden Trust scholarship places for pupils wishing to study physics and a further scholarship aimed at pupils wishing to study arts, humanities and foreign languages in particular. All scholarships cover all school expenses from fees and uniform to lunch and travel and are aimed at families unable to afford independent education.

After another record year, Matthew is just one of Yarm School’s success stories. Andrew Brown, from Kirklevington, achieved two A*'s, two A's and a B grade after successfully juggling his studies with rowing for team GB. Fresh from rowing in the Junior World Championships, at Eton, Andrew turned down a university offer from Oxford when he was offered a Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship at Durham University. Andrew will read engineering at Durham and hopes to continue to juggle rowing and his studies, “I know engineering will be a tough course but I will just have to continue to work hard whilst focusing on rowing. I am looking forward to starting at Durham and have my first training camp in September at the university.”

Mr David Dunn, Headmaster at Yarm School, said: “It is an extremely successful year for the school with many new records being set. This year we have seen the largest proportion ever of pupils opting to study four or more A levels (Average no of A levels per candidate 4.68) because of their diverse interests and natural enthusiasm for learning.”
