Ethos

Our aim is to provide pupils with the skills they need to develop into adults who will contribute positively to society.  To this end it is important to us that all kinds of skills and abilities are honed within each individual - a Yarm School education is about far more than just academic achievement.

Each pupil is strongly encouraged to take part in at least one extra-curricular activity. There is a huge range of clubs and societies which meet either at lunch-time or after school on a regular basis.  Over 50 activities take place each week, as diverse as Canoeing and Chess, Horseriding and Beekeeping.  We believe strongly that every pupil should develop hobbies and interests; not only are they a source of much happiness at School, but they also develop skills and interests which will stay with the pupil for many years.

We have a thriving Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme, through which large numbers of pupils acquire self-reliance and learn the importance of service to the community. There is also a voluntary and highly successful Combined Cadet Force, which teaches pupils the discipline inherent in the Forces, and offers experiences such as visits to the Red Arrows base, and visits from army helicopter pilots and bomb disposal units.

At weekends and during the holidays there are frequent trips and expeditions, many of them adventurous.  Outdoor education is a major part of life at Yarm School, and pupils can explore caves, climb mountains and traverse entire countries in canoes! We boast a full time, highly qualified member of staff whose sole remit is to provide these fantastic opportunities.

Allied to all this is a strong focus on developing pupils' interest in the performing arts.  Numerous musical ensembles perform concerts throughout the year, and we regularly put on several plays, both classic and contemporary.  The new performing arts centre, due for completion in 2011, will be a wonderful boost to this important and vibrant part of Yarm School.  More information on all these activities can be found in the relevant pages of the website.

The school life of Yarm School pupils is varied, exciting, and fast-paced.  There is never a dull moment as we embody our philosophy of 'educating for life'.
