Alexandra Prideaux entered the Wicked Young Writers Awards with her poem and was selected as a finalist to go to the awards ceremony in London. Alexandra was one of just twenty, in the age 5-7 category, selected from across the country.
The Wicked Young Writer Awards was established by the long-running musical WICKED to link the important messages of the production with a competition that would inspire young people to use creative writing to look at life a little differently.
The Award recognises excellence in writing, encourages creativity, and helps develop writing talent in young people between 5-25 years old from across the UK. Since its launch in 2010, they have received over 20,000 entries to the award.
Alexandra’s poem is now published in two anthologies: the Wicked Young Writers Award 2018 finalists’ anthology, and the Terry Kelly Poetry Prize 2018 finalists’ anthology.
Swimming by Alexandra Prideaux
Dad and I
jumping in -
nervous about going under -
Up nose, spit out. Feel wobbly.
what’s the smell, the noise?
sounds of happiness,
water, armbands, boys
and girls. Doggy paddle.
Fountain, drains through the cracks.
Tickly showers, stinging eyes,
vending machine snacks.
