As we rapidly approach the end of term I am writing to sign-off and to introduce my successor.
I have thoroughly enjoyed leading the school over the last 20 years and seeing so many pupils flourish both here and beyond in their lives and careers. Nothing gives a teacher greater pleasure than seeing a youngster make the very most of their potential, seize the fantastic opportunities on offer and go on to enjoy success in whatever form that may take. The contact I regularly receive from Former Pupils, who are happy and fulfilled in their lives and who so often look back with gratitude on their school days, gives me a real sense of pride.
The school has changed beyond recognition since I joined it in 1999: we are now fully coeducational, have an enviable reputation for academic, pastoral and extra-curricular provision and enjoy a strong reputation locally, regionally and nationally. It was a wonderful honour, in my final year, to receive the accolade of Sunday Times NE Independent School of the Year.
I have had the great fortune to work with some superb colleagues – teachers and non-teachers – who all combine to give the pupils such a wonderful school. I would like to thank them all most sincerely as well as recording my gratitude to the Governors for employing and backing me over the last 20 years – and trusting me to spend over £30M!!! I think it is fair to say that we have totally transformed the physical environment to provide one of the best school campuses in the country.
I am very proud of what the school has become and am confident it has a bright future ahead. I think Huw Williams is an excellent appointment and will take Yarm forward in lots of exciting ways. He and I have liaised very closely since his appointment and you can be reassured that there will be a very smooth handover. I am pleased to be retained to play a small role in the continued physical development of our facilities, but will be keeping a low profile, whilst giving Huw my total support. I wish him every success as he takes over this wonderful school.
Please note that my e-mail address email@example.com will cease to be the point of contact for the Headmaster. Instead, Dr Williams (and our PA, Mrs Jane Herbert) can be contacted on the new address: firstname.lastname@example.org
It has been a tremendous honour and privilege to lead this fantastic school. Over the years I have received several approaches to lure me away to other supposedly more famous institutions, but I can honestly say that I haven’t given them a moment’s thought because I have built up such a passion for Yarm School, its people and community. Thank you for having me.
With my very best wishes,
