There are nine teachers in the English Department, delivering an internally designed course throughout the lower school, before preparing all pupils for CIE IGCSE English Language and IGCSE English Literature. In the Sixth Form the English Department offers a popular English Literature A Level, for which we teach the OCR Specification. English lessons are nearly all taught in a suite of outstanding modern classrooms on the top floor of the Riverside Building, overlooking a delightful stretch of the River Tees to wooded pasture beyond. The Head of Department is Mr Ewan Craig.
English at Yarm is taught in a way that combines academic rigour with an enthusiastic and flexible approach. The department’s teachers, each different in style, are united in their aim of offering a highly dynamic experience of English for the students within a clear overall framework. A good deal of emphasis is placed on literature throughout our teaching, as we believe that engagement with a wide variety of good writing is at the heart of developing both imagination and articulacy. We also give appropriate attention to the full range of skills, both written and oral, that will equip our pupils to succeed in the world around them.
Outside the classroom, the English department offers regular theatre trips for all ages, and hosts visiting writers and other speakers. The Head of Drama is a member of the department, and we are instrumental in producing many of the school’s wide programme of drama events. We run reading groups for pupils of different ages and also enter pupils for various competitions held both across the region and nationally: for example, the Kidslit Quiz, Shakespeare by Heart, and assorted writing competitions
