Drama plays a significant role in school life, providing opportunities for pupils to perform, direct and develop technical skills in lighting and sound.

There are usually three main productions in a year, aimed at the Sixth Form, the Fourth and Fifth Year, and the First, Second and Third Year. These productions are teacher-directed, aim for the highest standards and involve a significant level of commitment. Every other year there is a major school musical; in recent years pupils have performed Guys and Dolls, Fame and Grease to great acclaim.

The House Drama and Duologues Competitions also take place every year and offer pupils the chance to work more independently on smaller productions and performances. For House Drama, Sixth Formers take charge of directing younger pupils and for the Duologues, pupils perform extracts of their own choice.

The 750 seat Princess Alexandra Auditorium is the venue for the biennial musical, House Drama Competition and Duologues. For the more intimate performances, the Studio Theatre provides the perfect setting.

With the addition of both performance drama and technical theatre on offer through the Activities Lessons, there really is the opportunity for everyone to get involved. At the next level, pupils are encouraged to audition for the National Youth Theatre, and others go off to study Drama as a degree.
